Case Study
Britain’s film heritage safe with SiteVault
The Client
The British Film Institute was established by the British government in 1933 to promote greater understanding, appreciation and access to film and television culture. The Institute is the custodian of the largest film archive in the world and is acknowledged as a world leader in film restoration and preservation.
The Challenge
BFI was running out of temperature-controlled storage and had a limited budget, yet had a growing remit to securely store a unique and expanding inventory. It needed a fast, economical solution that did not require capital or the long arduous process of applying for approval. It also needed a solution that would adapt and grow in line with its needs. Above all it needed something secure, safe and reliable.
The Solution
The final solution was eight SiteVault storage containers connected to two interconnecting lobby containers, totalling a space of almost 25,000 cubic feet (692 cubic metres). Each lobby container was temperature controlled at 56F (15C) and 45% humidity. Each storage container was controlled at 41F (5C) and 30-35% humidity, remotely monitored via modem and satellite, fitted with activated carbon filters to remove any build up of acetic gas and racked out for the storage of film. They were also fitted with a personnel door, a viewing window and a panic or locked-in alarm. Storage and lobby containers had mains, emergency lighting and were given machinery emergency stops. Lobbies were fitted with power sockets to support administration equipment.
The Conclusion
SiteVault was built, tested and installed and the film stock securely stored within three months of official order. The BFI are so happy with the solution that they have added an extra five SiteVault units – a 50% increase on their original order. |
